What College Students Need to Know about Their Oral Health

Posted on 12/15/2015 by Dr. Andrew Zeiger
A man that has graduated from college.Going off to college is liable to change your life in a variety of ways. Now that you are away from home, you'll need to be more in charge of your own health and welfare, and this includes your dental visits.

Making healthy food choices, brushing, and flossing can also become difficult now that you are on your own, and there are some important things that you need to know about your oral health after you head off to school.

Late-Night Study Sessions

When you are cramming for finals and trying to get your term papers completed at the last minute, you are liable to have some late nights. To stay awake, many people consume large amounts of energy drinks, soda, or coffee, and these beverages can be terrible for your teeth. Drinking water can help to reduce your risk of tooth decay and cavities if you are relying on these drinks to stay awake.

Late-night snacking is also common during these sessions, so college students should work to make healthy choices. Instead of chips, cookies, or candy, choose fresh produce, nuts, and dairy products instead. You'll get a better energy boost without jeopardizing your oral health.

Alcohol Consumption

Studies have shown that 80% of college students are regularly consuming alcohol, and about half of these students are binge drinking. Alcohol consumption comes with a variety of dangers, but it can also be detrimental to your teeth.

Alcohol contains sugars that the bacteria in your mouth will love to consume, causing decay. Also, when you are drinking, you are less likely to brush your teeth at night and will be more likely to make poor food decisions that can lead to oral health issues.

If you've recently gone off to college and are in need of a dental evaluation, call our office today for an appointment.
