When you have bone loss, you lose teeth. When properly treated, gum disease can usually be corrected within a short period of time, unless an underlying health condition is causing the gum disease. Once your gingivitis is gone, it is up to you to ensure it doesn't come back.
Regular Dental MaintenanceRegardless of the cause of your gingivitis the way you maintain the cleanliness of your teeth and mouth will go a long way to keeping a repeat performance of gingivitis. Always brush your teeth in the morning and at night before you go to bed.
When you get a toothbrush, be sure you get a soft bristle brush. These are easier on your gums and less likely to damage the enamel if you brush too aggressively.
Be sure you floss regularly. Flossing not only cleans your teeth also helps keep cavities from forming at your gum line. It also helps your gums heal more quickly.
Watch Your Diet
Nothing can mess up your gums worse than a poor diet. You should be eating a diet high in nutrients and vitamins to help maintain your oral health. Fresh vegetables are important in your diet. Also important are fresh fruits.
Dried fruits aren't as good and can even have a higher sugar content as the result of the dehydration process. Be sure, when you choose your fruits and vegetables that you choose varieties that are less acidic. Choose apples over oranges.
You should also drink milk or water after you finish each meal or snack. Milk neutralizes the acid in your mouth. Reducing the acidity is one of the best things you can do.
