Can You Avoid Dental Stains By Drinking Clear Soda?

Can You Avoid Dental Stains By Drinking Clear Soda?If you want to avoid dental stains while continuing to drink your favorite soda, you may believe that clear options are the way to go. Unfortunately, clear sodas are just as damaging to the teeth.

While dark-colored soda may be slightly worse for staining than clear soda due to the coloring, all soda is harmful to the teeth.

How Do Soda Stains Develop?

Staining from soda is caused primarily by two substances: chromogens and phosphoric acid. The chromogens give soda its color, so dark-colored drinks will have more. They stain the teeth, and can easily cause a dingy, yellow appearance to your teeth over time.

Phosphoric acid is also dangerous when it comes to your teeth. While this ingredient will give your teeth the flavor that you enjoy, it weakens the enamel, which protects your teeth. When the enamel is weak, teeth are more susceptible to staining.

It is also worth noting that soda is extremely high in sugar, which is a major food source for oral bacteria. The bacteria will create an acidic byproduct, which will further break down the enamel, making the tooth vulnerable to stains.

What Can You Do about Soda Stains?

Fortunately, there are steps you can take if you are worried about soda stains. Prevention is key, and you'll want to avoid drinking soda whenever possible. If you do choose to indulge, rinse your mouth out with water right away, and use a straw so that the liquid is diverted away from your teeth.

In regards to getting rid of stains, there are many great whitening treatments available, including the in-office whitening offered by our dental practice.
