Periodontal (Gum) Disease
When it comes to oral health we at Bradshaw Family Dental understand that there are multiple facets to keeping teeth happy and healthy and it doesn’t stop at just teeth – the whole mouth has to be taken care of. Patient education on important issue can mean the difference between a good oral hygiene routine and one that is lackluster. Our goal is to teach you as much as we can about periodontal disease, so that you can do your best to protect your mouth from it.
What is periodontal disease?There are two forms of periodontal disease – early and late stage. The early stage is commonly referred to as “gum disease/gingivitis”, which should give you a decent idea of what periodontal disease is – an infection of the gums. Bacteria within the mouth can form plaque and tartar that can eat away at the teeth and cause decay. What people don’t realize is that if that bacteria is left to accumulate for long enough it will do so even below the gum line.
When tartar builds up below the gum line it tends to push the gums away from the surface of the tooth, which can create a pocket between the teeth and gums and infect healthy gum tissue. The pocket allows food particles to wedge themselves deep into healthy gum tissue and worsen the problem. When the issue is in the early stages (gingivitis) it is still reversible and usually remedied with studious dental care.
If it goes untreated for long enough it can progress into late stage periodontitis, which often leads to bone and soft tissue loss. The worst part about late stage periodontitis is it’s not curable and must be taken care of for the rest of your life.
How to Prevent Gum DiseaseOur main goal at Bradshaw Family Dental is to prevent all damaging disease and maladies from taking hold of your mouth. We do everything we can to ensure that you leave our office with a clean bill of oral health but we also understand the importance of educating you on how to prevent issues like periodontitis from starting. After all, you spend the most time taking care of your mouth, and should know how to prevent serious issues like gum disease.
So what is the key to preventing gum disease? Keeping your mouth clean and happy! Seriously it’s as simple as brushing at least twice a day and flossing once a day. Brushing after breakfast and before bed yields the best results. There is an erroneous belief that brushing harder is better – light brushing with a toothbrush that has soft bristles is more than adequate to brush away the bacterial buildup. Brushing too hard can damage your teeth by brushing away the enamel.
Always make sure to come in to see us at least twice a year for a professional cleaning and examination. These appointments are critical so that we can ensure that your oral health is in tip-top condition, and if any issues are apparent, we can treat them while they are still in their early stages.
