We're all only too familiar with the dinner table that results in a burnt tongue. Whether it's because we bit into food we didn't know was too hot or sipped on a cup of hot coffee or tea, this happens all too often. The next time it happens to you, there are a few things you should do. Sip, Soothe, and Cool Your TongueOnce you realize you've burnt your tongue you'll immediately want to grab a glass of cold water. As with any other type of burn, the cold water will quickly regulate the burn by bringing down the temperature. It will also help to hydrate your mouth so that saliva will start flowing again, keeping bacteria from causing any further harm.Reach for Salt or SugarSalt is a natural antiseptic. It, along with sugar, also act as a natural pain reliever. Together, this combination can make your mouth feel better. Simply mix 1/8-teaspoon of salt with some water and swish it around your mouth or sprinkle some sugar over the top of your tongue. Reach for whichever of these two items you have available to make your tongue feel better. These are much better options than taking an over the counter pain medication, which is your other option. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be used until your tongue fully heals but they should be last resorts as they're not something you want to take a lot of. Call us, Your DentistWhen you're still having problems with your burnt tongue, make sure you give our office a call. This is particularly important for you to do if you get a second degree burn that results in a blister – something that is rare, fortunately. Nevertheless, we're here for you so you can enjoy dinner again comfortably so give us a call when and if you think we can help. |
