We typically only extract teeth that are causing you pain or other issues that cannot be remedied. In doing so, we remove it from the bone. There are a few different reasons why we may recommend this procedure to you.A Severely Decayed ToothWhen tooth decay reaches your tooth's pulp (the center of your tooth), its bacteria will cause an infection there. This is when we will recommend that you have a root canal. If the infection is severe enough, we will also extract your tooth to prevent the infection from spreading any further.Periodontal DiseaseWhen you have periodontal disease (a.k.a. gum disease), your gums and other structures you're your periodontal ligaments and alveolar bone are infected. Hopefully you have routine visits to our office so we can catch this early enough – possibly before it even starts since we know it's caused by dental plaque (the sticky bacterial substance that forms on your teeth after you eat or drink). However, if your tooth grows loose because of periodontal disease, we may need to extract it.An Impacted ToothAn impacted tooth occurs when it can't erupt through the gums. This typically happens with your wisdom teeth. When it happens, we will oftentimes recommend that this tooth be extracted so it doesn't cause any damage to the teeth around it.Doing so will also lessen the risk of you developing additional oral health issues because your teeth have overcrowded your mouth. Of course, we won't simply extract a tooth before really considering how it will impact the rest of your mouth. When you find yourself faced with any of these issues, you'll probably need to have your tooth extracted. We aim to make this procedure as painless as possible so don't be afraid to give our office a call and schedule an appointment for you tooth extraction today. |
