![]() Although you may not have heard of this procedure before, it's been around since the 1960's. It's continued over the years because studies show that sealants are both safe and effective. Why You Should Consider Getting SealantsOne of the most important reasons why you should get dental sealants is to prevent your tooth from decaying. While you may argue that there's fluoride in your toothpaste and the water that you drink, it's only useful in protecting your tooth's smooth surface. This leaves the teeth in the back of your mouth in need of protection. This is where sealants come in to cover them and keep the germs and food out. If you have this done before your teeth can decay, you'll save yourself a lot of time and money that would have otherwise been spent on things like crowns, fillings, and caps. Who Should Get Sealants? As soon as your child's permanent molars come in, they should have sealants put on them. This usually happens when your child is between 5 – 7-years-old. They should also have sealants put on their second permanent molars, which will come in when your child is between 11 – 14-years-old. Additionally, if we notice any pits or grooves in your teeth over the years, we'll recommend getting sealants there and then too.How Long Sealants LastYou should expect sealants to last around 10 years. However, it's important that we check them regularly to make sure they don't chip or wear away. If we notice anything wrong with your sealants, we can repair them simply by adding more sealant. This is why you should maintain routine dental appointments with our office. If you don't already have an appointment scheduled, make sure you give us a call to set one up today. |
