More and more information about the effects of e-cigarettes and vaping is coming to light. Advertisements often portray the use of e-cigarettes as fun, safe devices, even though they are not. However, our dentist is regularly seeing evidence that vaping is more dangerous than previously thought.Ingredients in VaporizersVapes or vaporizers are devices that operate on batteries. There is a coil inside the device that heats up and gets incredibly hot. As liquids pass over those coils, the liquid becomes a vapor that the user will breathe in. One of the main ingredients in e-juice is vegetable glycerol. Its viscosity multiplies fourfold when it hits the heating element and is deposited on user's teeth. The flavoring itself is acidic and it's just coated your teeth and any small pockets and crevices that a small molecule can reach. By using these vapes all day long, the effect is similar to sucking on a sugar packed sucker throughout the day. The verdict is still out if overall they are safer than cigarettes for your physical health, but the verdict is in for oral health. Gum Disease and VapingThere was a recent study that found there were definite, significant effects on the body, including oral health, when e-cigarettes were burned. The body then releases proteins that lead to inflammation, which has the potential to lead to many different ailments, especially those of the oral cavity and the lungs. While there are many studies that document how the body responds to nicotine, this was the first to show the negative effects of e-cigarettes on the body. Our office hopes this information can shed some light on a growing trend that is gaining popularity with younger crowds, especially middle and high-school-aged children. Educate your children and call us if you have any further questions. We want to help protect your mouth from known, and some unknown issues. |
