What is a TMJ?
If you are experiencing jaw pain, one acronym you have likely seen around is TMJ. What is that, though? Your TMJ, or Temporomandibular joint, is what allows your jaw to move. This can be up and down, or side to side. It is that joint near your ear that you can feel moving when you chew. When it is healthy, it is lined up properly. This means that it equally distributes bite force and causes no pain or discomfort when it comes to eating, drinking, or speaking. Other than those activities, though, a healthy TMJ is essential just to exist without pain. If it is not lined up properly or it has been injured, you could be subject to intense pain in the area and headaches. It can also lead to sinus or ear infections, which can cause further problems from there.
What is TMD?
TMD stands for Temporomandibular joint disorder. This is a very common problem which consists of pain in the muscles or the joint itself. It can cause your joint to click or grind, or the areas around it to swell painfully.
How do I get rid of it?
Treating TMD has several options, like more oral health issues. One of these options is a custom mouthguard. This mouthguard is specially created for you by a machine that we can use to monitor and process the movements of your jaw. When you use it, it gently realigns your jaw. It takes time, but when it is finished, your jaw is in the perfect position for pain-free eating and speaking and comfortable living once more. Another potential option if a mouthguard is ineffective or if you already have other concerns you need addressed could be a whole mouth restoration. This can help you to solve all of your problems in one convenient package!
