Dental procedure being performed at Bradshaw Family Dental in Prescott Valley, AZLife comes at us fast. It is easy to get so caught up in the moment that we miss mundane things like dental appointments. When oral health gets pushed aside due to the rigors of everyday life, sometimes we get lucky and nothing bad happens to our teeth. Sometimes our teeth pay the price. When your teeth suffer, have no fear – dental crowns can help restore them!

Why would I need a dental crown?

When your tooth becomes so decayed or damaged that it is unable to continue functioning as a stable tooth it will need to be replaced with a crown. There are many factors that contribute to a tooth reaching the point where it needs to be replaced with a crown. Neglect of your oral hygiene is only one of many possible contributing factors.

What is a dental crown?

There are two main parts of your tooth – the root (below the gums) and the crown (above the gums). When the crown of your tooth has been damaged to the point that it cannot continue functioning we can replace it with a dental crown.

Essentially, we reshape your tooth by removing the damage or decay. Once this is done, we can place a custom-made artificial crown over what remains of your natural tooth. This artificial crown will look and act just as your normal, healthy tooth would.

Dental Crown Procedure

Typically, it requires two visits to our office to receive a dental crown. The first visit consists of us measuring your tooth and making an impression of it. We will send the measurements to a dental laboratory to be fabricated. We will also prepare your tooth for the crown.

Tooth preparation for a dental crown involves shaving portions of the enamel off of the tooth - the goal of this is twofold. We need to remove any damage or decay present on the tooth to stop it’s spread within the tooth. The other reason we remove enamel from the tooth is so that we can shape it in such a way that it will accept the crown.

Once the tooth has been shaped we will affix a temporary crown to it with temporary cement. You will be able to use your temporary crown almost exactly like your normal tooth. Just remember that it is a temporary crown, and particularly chewy or hard foods should be avoided because it can come off.

Once we receive the permanent crown from the dental laboratory it will be time for your second visit to our office. During this visit we will remove the temporary crown and place the permanent. The permanent crown will be attached to your tooth with long lasting dental cement.

With proper care and treatment of your new dental crown you can expect it to last a long time. It is normal for crowns to last at least ten years before needing to be replaced and they can easily last longer.
