To Our Valued Patients at Surprise Smiles,

Welcome! We are open, looking forward to seeing returning patients, accepting new patients, and operating under normal business hours! The Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDS) is still not recommending any type of closures or modification in hours. We will continue to monitor information coming from both the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and AZDHS and keep you apprised of any changes or updates. We will stay on top of this information and bring it to you as soon as possible through our website, email, and social media.

As we continue to navigate through the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, our dentists and dental team want to assure you that we are continuing to do our best to make sure it a priority that we are following the latest health and safety guidelines from the CDC, specifically as they relate to the dental industry. We value keeping our patients and staff members safe and comfortable.

As part of our daily standard health and safety protocols, our office follows ‘Universal Precautions’ in order to protect our patients and our staff. These are precautions we have always taken, and are not new. By taking ‘universal precautions’ means we always assume that anyone could potentially be carrying a contagious and dangerous disease. We therefore follow strict guidelines to prevent the transmission of any potential disease, be it COVID-19 (Coronavirus), hepatitis, tuberculosis, HIV, or any other disease. This has been a standard of care we follow, per the CDC, in regard to blood borne pathogens.

These measures include:
•  strict hand washing protocols
•  use of (single use) disposable protective equipment and barriers
•  thorough disinfection of exposed or potentially exposed surfaces after every patient visit
•  disinfection and high-heat steam sterilization of instruments and routine monitoring of sterilization verification
•  continued education on infection control

•  disinfecting common surface areas every 30 minutes
•  providing hand sanitizer in common areas
•  screening everyone who enters our offices based on CDC recommendations
•  offering preprocedural mouth rinse

As state and national health and safety regulations change and evolve during these times, Surprise Smiles is dedicated to monitoring and evaluating our dental practice and office space for any potential risks as we serve our patients and community. We strive to maintain an approach to our dentistry services that is both safe and beneficial to everyone we serve.

We strive to provide a safe, healthy, comfortable, and relaxed environment for everyone that comes into our dental office. We follow the American Dental Association’s Update to Office Procedures During COVID-19 in regard to safe office procedures, workplace hazards, and making decisions for best office practices. We stay informed on recent information given to dentists in this regard, as well as keeping up to date with any changes recommended by the CDC.

Please let us know if you have any questions in regard to our health and safety protocols here at Surprise Smiles. We recognize that it can be challenging during these unprecedented times of COVID-19. We all want to get back to our normal lives, and we will be able to do so, in a safe, wise, and healthy manner. We will be happy to answer any questions that you may have in regard to our dental practice health and safety protocols, cleaning, and disinfecting procedures we follow.

Benefits of Using Baking Soda for Oral Health

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Dr. Andrew Zeiger
Benefits of Using Baking Soda for Oral HealthSodium bicarbonate or baking soda is a highly reactive salt that is formed when the molecules of sodium, hydrogen, and carbonate are combined in the ratio of 1:1:3. Sodium bicarbonate exists as a white crystalline solid, but the baking soda that is commonly available at grocery stores and in our pantries is made into a powder form.

In the kitchen, baking soda is an essential ingredient for baking. It causes the dough to rise. However, its benefits for oral health and care are yet to be popularized.

The benefits of using baking soda for oral health are as follows:

Teeth Whitening

Baking soda along with some lemon juice is a popular home remedy for teeth whitening. Back soda is a natural and mild abrasive that can remove stains from the surface of the teeth. However, it must be noted that baking soda has the potential to erode enamel if used too often or for longer durations.

To whiten your teeth with baking soda, mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 3 to 4 drops of lemon juice and make it into a fine paste. Gently brush your teeth with this paste and leave it on your teeth for 2 minutes. Thoroughly rinse your mouth afterward. Do not use this paste more than twice a week. Continue to do this for 3 months, and you will see a noticeable change in the color of your teeth.

Studies have shown that toothpaste that contains baking soda is more effective for whitening teeth as compared to the ones that do not contain sodium bicarbonate as an active ingredient.

Mouth Rise or Mouth Wash

Baking soda has anti-bacterial and antimicrobial properties. It can be used as a mouth wash or mouth rinse after brushing your teeth to ensure that all the germs and bacteria have been removed from your mouth, even from those areas where your brush was unable to reach.

Many people prefer to use baking soda as a natural mouthwash instead of using alcohol-based mouthwashes. Research has shown using baking soda as a mouth wash helps to keep bacteria at bay, freshens our breath, and prevents oral infections and diseases.

Moreover, the baking soda mouthwash neutralizes the pH level of our saliva, makes it more alkaline so that the enamel of our tooth does not corrode because of increased acid in our saliva.

To make the baking soda mouthwash, simply add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of warm water and mix it well. Sip the mixture, rinse your mouth with it without swallowing, and repeat until your whole mouth feels clean and fresh.

Soothes Canker Sores

Canker sores are small painful blisters or ulcers that are caused by inflammation in our mouth or intestines. They mostly appear on the tongue, gums, and insides of our cheeks.

Some studies have shown that baking soda is helpful in relieving pain and discomfort that is caused by canker sores. Its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help soothe the pain.

You can make a banking soda rinse by mixing baking soda with water and rinsing your mouth with it at least thrice a day until the sores heal.
